Anatomy Of The Perfect Bodysuit

Why this bodysuit is my new favorite and perfect for spring!

On the hunt for the perfect bodysuit

I’ll be the first to admit, I typically avoid buying bodysuits. Even though they’re on trend, I usually find them to be uncomfortable and a total pain to deal with (especially when you need to hit the ladies’ room!). While browsing online at Nordstrom, looking for some new clothes for the beautiful weather we’ve been having here in Atlanta, I stumbled across this bodysuit by Free People. It had a cute sleeve and so I purchased it on a whim — even though it was not my typical style, and not a color I usually choose! Worst case scenario, I could just return it, right? One great thing about shopping at Nordstrom, and a reason I am such a loyal patron, is because of their great return policy.

The Fit

I was so pleasantly surprised when it arrived just a few days later! To begin, just ordering something in the correct size is an accomplishment in itself — it’s so easy to get the sizing wrong when ordering clothes online, especially since brand sizing can vary so greatly. But luckily, it actually fit! The back has a thong shape and it closes with snaps at the crotch. I find this construction to typically be too thick and cumbersome, and uncomfortable to wear after about 15 minutes, when I want to rip the whole thing off and never wear it again. However, Free People did a really nice job with this style and I comfortably wore it for hours without even remembering that it was a bodysuit. In my opinion it runs true to size, and I was able to wear my usual size in the style.

The Puff Sleeve

I was also worried that the puff sleeve would be too extreme and look like I had stepped straight out of the 80’s. Because the fabric is lightweight, the sleeve drapes so nicely and has just the right amount of puff to it. It’s a cute detail, and not overwhelming.

The Details

Another great detail about this style is that it has gathering (or shirring) along the side seams, which isn’t really noticeable when you’re wearing it, but gives a little more ease so that it’s not skin tight and showing every lump and bump. It’s also a clever way to add additional body length into the garment for people with longer torsos who may need it.

The Fabric

The fabric is lightweight, perfect for the spring and summer season, especially here in the south where you know it will hit the 100’s by mid summer! But the fabric also has enough weight to it that it hides the outlines of your bra, creating a put together and classy look all around.

The Perfect Bodysuit

Given that I’ve worked in the apparel industry for roughly 15 years, I’m a pretty tough critic when it comes to the fit, construction, and details of clothing. I might usually be shopping for clothing with a beer budget, but I’ve definitely got champagne taste when it comes to fit and quality! So for me to give something such a glowing review, it has to be a good product! I’m happy to say this is the champagne of cute summery bodysuits, and I will definitely be buying it in one or two more colors!

The Styling

For a cute but casual look, I paired my yellow bodysuit with an older pair of Madewell jeans (similar style linked below), and a pair of nude heeled sandals to wear out for dinner on a patio with girlfriends. I would love to buy this in the light blue/off-white color to wear for a night out — with tailored wide leg trousers and some periwinkle accessories (it is the color of the year after all!).
