I’m not big on watching scary movies, and reading books from the thriller genre is not usually my first choice, but something about October always activates my desire for a little spooky indulgence. There’s a chill in the air, I’ve switched over to my fall wardrobe (regardless of the Atlanta heat), I’m sipping on something pumpkin flavored, and I want to be entertained by something a little more wicked than just the demons I’m usually summoning via dating apps. Here are few ways I’m indulging in my more witchy side this season!
ONE/ Tarot Cards
Why not get a little woo this season and try your hand at pulling tarot cards for yourself? One of my favorite eclectic little stores in Atlanta is the Modern Mystic crystal shop, and I’ve recently purchased a few crystals and a deck of tarot cards. Based more in the intuitive than the occult, these cards are a fun and introspective way to celebrate the season and learn more about yourself, and I love the muted color palette and traditional images of this deck.
TWO/ The Ex Hex by Erin Sterling
This book was an October BOTM pick, which was great because it was already at the top of my TBR (to be read!) pile. A New York Times bestseller, it’s a light and paranormal romance about wishes, witches, and hexes gone wrong. It just arrived today, and I can’t wait to dive in!
THREE/ Practical Magic
Adapted by Alice Hoffman’s book, this movie (and soundtrack!) is as nostalgic as it is still relevant today. Get your fill of 90’s fashion inspiration and explore themes of love, loss, family, and survival in this romantic comedy, and indulge in some midnight margaritas while you’re at it! Since I enjoy this movie so much, I’d like to read the book, which has a few in the series, with The Book of Magic just coming out this year. I’ve heard they’re really good, so I’ll be adding them to my TBR pile soon.
FOUR/ Midnight Margaritas
Speaking of, celebrate the season with some devilishly good margaritas! Inspired by the movie Practical Magic, grab a couple of your favorite witches and brew up a cauldron of these!
Midnight Margaritas (Practical Magic Style)
Equipment
- cocktail shaker
- glass
- lemon/lime squeezer
Ingredients
- 1.5 ounce your favorite tequila
- 1 ounce triple sec
- 1 squeeze agave
- 2 limes
Instructions
- Prepare your glass by running the juice of the lime along the outer rim and dipping in salt, Tajin, or festive sprinkles
- Combine the tequila, agave, orange liqueur, and juice of 2 limes in the cocktail shaker and shake to your heart's content!
- Add a few ice cubes to your glass, strain the margarita mix over ice, and garnish with a lime wedge
- Cheers your witchy self and enjoy your potion!
FIVE/ Spooked! Podcast
I love listening to a good podcast, whether it’s helping me calm my inner road rage during Atlanta traffic, or while doing mundane chores around the house. I enjoy the company and feel like I’m listening to a conversation among friends. During October I do like to listen to a scary story or two. While there’s an array of spooky podcasts, lately I’ve been enjoying the stories on Spooked!, which gives you the chills, but doesn’t spook me enough to have any trouble sleeping through the night!
